our boss babe interviews are so much fun! Our next one is with our babetown e retreat educator katie of la rousse boudoir.
TBC: Can you tell us a little about you?
Katie: I was born and raised in Southern California, I have a love for travel and adventure. I’m a bit restless at times. I started out my professional life as an elementary school teacher, worked abroad in Vietnam, and did a huge career switcheroo into photography in 2013. I adore anything vintage, coffee shops, fashion, decorating, and eating pizza.
TBC: What was the driving force behind your starting your business?
Katie: I started thinking about having my own business during my second year of teaching. Honestly, I realized that a traditional 9-5 job was not for me and I craved freedom. I’d always had an eye for photography and design, so I started tinkering with making a website showcasing photos I’d taken just for fun and it evolved from there. Being creative is my favorite thing about life, and I like waking up knowing that I get to decide how to spend my day. No one is placing any limits on me or telling me how things should be done.
TBC: What is the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?
Katie: Hmm, the power of the follow-up. When I started out, I didn’t want to be pushy or annoying and so I didn’t do much of following up with people who inquired for a session. Once I started doing this, I saw my bookings increase. Or at the very least, people told me why they decided not to book, which was also helpful information.
TBC: So you are a fantastic photographer that specializes in Boudoir photography. What made you decide on your specialty?
Katie: Well thank you! The only way to really know what kind of photography you enjoy most is to begin dabbling in anything that interests you. I started off saying yes to everything, and I am still moving toward saying yes to only projects that excite me. I think that’s how you find your niche.
TBC: You love black and white photos. Is it because you love old black and white French films?
Katie: To say I love black and white photos is the understatement of the year. I am completely obsessed. Not so much French films, but just the honest feel of vintage black and white photography. It feels classic and timeless.
TBC: How do you encourage another boss babe to feel comfortable in her skin for your photoshoot?
Katie: There’s a bit of prep in the form of questionnaires. On the questionnaire I email to all my clients, it states: “Please feel relaxed and ready knowing that you are in good hands! Try not to be nervous about your so called ‘flaws’, because I truly find the most beautiful parts of every woman. We'll capture all your best angles!” So even beforehand I’m trying to ease her nerves. I also offer champagne the day of the shoot, which definitely adds to the comfort level!
TBC: Looking forward 5 years, where do you see your photography business?
Katie: I hope to continue photographing unique women in interesting spaces that inspire me. Saying yes to only my ideal clients. Having my own studio space with velvet couches and a lingerie wardrobe for ladies to play dress up.
TBC: Your photos are gorgeous and oh so serious, but we are interested to see if you have any fun behind the scenes stories?
Katie: Oh good question! Nothing too crazy. We laugh about booty shots a lot - just the directions I give to get into a flattering pose. There is not really a non-awkward way to get a good booty shot. But it’s always worth it.
