BOSS BABE INTERVIEW | Heather P
THIS NEXT SPOTLIGHT IS OUR BOSS BABE INTERVIEW WITH BABETOWN E RETREAT EDUCATOR HEATHER P OF NUMBER NERD BOOKKEEPING SOLUTIONS!
TBC: Can you tell us a little about you?
Heather P: I’m not good at talking about myself so here’s a link to my About Page on my website.
TBC: What was the driving force behind starting your business?
Heather: I have a passion for helping others get organized with their “numbers” and most importantly understand what they mean! I was working full-time as an employee for someone else and wanted a part-time gig to have extra money. Then, I decided I wanted even more and went from 2 clients to 12 in (4) months - all while working full-time! Three months later I went full-time with my own business, Number Nerd Bookkeeping Solutions. On January 25, 2017 it was officially a year that I’ve been doing Number Nerd full-time. Woohoo! Yay to me.
TBC: What is the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?
Heather P: Long to hire, quick to fire.
TBC: How long have you been working as a bookkeeper? What’s one thing you’ve learned over the years?
Heather P: I’ve been a bookkeeper for over 21 years (I have a recent blog post of how I get started - out of boredom). One thing that I’ve learned over the years is to be quiet and listen. You’d be surprised what your employer or clients will share with you when you listen and aren’t talking.
TBC: What’s the number 1 question people normally have once they start working with you?
Heather P: Literally, they ask “what’s next?” How do we work virtually together and what is my availability? Those 2 questions typically go hand in hand. During my introductory calls (before they are clients) I go over the process of how we work together virtually, my preferred method of contact (via email), and my availability. Oh, and that I can be reached on my business number via text - my clients love this!
TBC: What’s the number 1 piece of advice you would share regarding bookkeeping?
Heather P: Separate your personal and business finances! Keep them separate 100%.
TBC: We know you are a QuickBooks lover! But what are some of the other systems you use to help keep your business organized?
Heather P: I use 17hats for my lead page, automating my workflows and contracts. I use Gmail for email and Google Calendar. I use Teamwork to manage client task lists. I track my time by using Harvest. And I love Cloze.com, I like to think of it as a virtual assistant that reminds me when I need to reach out to clients and various contacts. It also tracks when I reach out to them as well by phone or email (relationship management, inbox, and contacts). I use Evernote to keep track of all of my client notes (I scan paper + pen notes from my individual client steno pads into my clients' Evernote Notebook). Let’s not forget Slack - that’s how I communicate with my team. I use Dropbox and Google Drive to save, organize, and share client documents.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? The beach, specifically back to Key West (had a blast with friends in December).
What is your favorite dish? Shredded beef tacos!
Do you have any weird talents? I don’t know about weird. But, I can knit and crochet. And I used to be a nail technician (when I lived in Alaska). I lived in North Pole, Alaska to be exact! Ha!
Are you an early bird or night owl? Good question. I used to be a night owl but, now I’m an early bird. I get more done in the early morning. Age does weird things to you!
What was the last book you read? Nora Roberts, The Bride Quartet Series. I was re-reading it. I read books that I enjoy over again, months and years later. I’m currently re-reading Fifty Shades Darker in anticipation of going to see the movie soon. And reading JD Robbs, Memory in Death (it's book 18 or so in the series). In addition, I have several books that I’ve started (on my Kindle) but haven’t finished. I like to switch things up depending on my mood. I’m a pretty avid reader and can knock a book out in a week. Sometimes, 2 books in a week. Just depends. I love to read!
What is your favorite social media platform? Instagram for sure!
What is your go-to drink? Non-alcohol would be San Pellegrino Blood Orange. Alcoholic: Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc.
What can’t you leave home without? My cell.
Best thing about where you live? The weather is amazing in the Valley of the Sun! I live in Surprise, Arizona. And I live in a beautiful home with a full gym, and everything I need inside and out. Pool too!
Are you a dog or cat person? Dog for sure! Cats make me sneeze (they didn’t always though).
What is your guilty pleasure? Gluten- free chocolate chip cookies.
What is your favorite quote? Don’t sweat the small stuff.
What is your favorite movie? Thomas Crown Affair.
What is the #1 song you can’t stop listening to right now? "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake Feat. Justin Bieber. But, I always have "Looked What the Cat Dragged In" by Poison ready to go. Yep, I sure do! Ha.
