Boss Babe Interview | Dannie Fountain
THIS NEXT SPOTLIGHT IS OUR BOSS BABE INTERVIEW WITH BABETOWN E RETREAT EDUCATOR DANNIE FOUNTAIN!
TBC: Can you tell us a little about you?
Dannie: I’m a dedicated nomad, passionate about traveling the world and exploring my own life too. I earned a Bachelor’s in Marketing from Albion College and a Masters in Human Resources from Indiana Wesleyan University. I’ve worked for brands like Whirlpool and HR Block and now work with a mix of corporate and small business clients!
TBC: What was the driving force behind your starting your business?
Dannie: My entrepreneurial journey started in 2008, when a state representative from my home state of Michigan asked if I'd like to work on campaign strategy to get the word out to young voters. Even though I wasn't yet of legal voting age myself, I said "heck yes!" and my entrepreneurial journey was born. (Fun fact: I said yes because at the time I was considering a career in law, not because I planned on becoming an entrepreneur.) He went on to win that election...and two more since. But here's the secret - after graduating from college, I didn't go "full time" right away. I first worked in marketing for brands like Whirlpool, H&R Block, and Mr. Kate.
TBC: What is the best piece of business advice that you’ve ever received?
Dannie: My mentor early on told me that it’s important to hang on to the reason why you went into business in the first place. On your “darkest days”, this will serve as a reminder of why you do what you do and on your best days it will remain a celebration of the fact that you get to pursue your passion!
TBC: So you are a strategist, author, and educator. What does a typical day look like for you?
Dannie: I don’t have a typical day, if I’m being honest. The combination of my nomadic lifestyle and the three different pillars in my business mean that every day is different, but that’s what keeps me inspired and fresh!
TBC: We love your Instagram! It is so crisp and clean! What is your secret to a great looking photo?
Dannie: I focus on the rule of thirds - I want to bring you an image that’s visually interesting and draws you in. The best way to do that is by following this rule! http://digital-photography-school.com/rule-of-thirds/
TBC: You are also launching a podcast in 2017. Tell us about that. What made you want to start podcasting?
Dannie: I was looking for an opportunity to tell the stories of newer entrepreneurs who are killing it but might not have the PR opportunities to express that. Lola and I started chatting and shared similar desires and the Self Made Babe podcast was born!
TBC: You have a heavy background in Marketing & PR. What is your number one tip for someone looking to up their PR game?
Dannie: Honestly? Start simple. Sign up for an account on HARO (Help A Reporter Out) and fill out pitches when the stories fit you / your business / your story.
TBC: You love to travel and have been to over 29 countries. Has this impacted your business, and how?
Dannie: My worldview impacts my business on a daily basis. I’ve met people in Budapest who don’t even know the history of their own country, people in Thailand living on less than $10 USD / day, people in Italy living in the most luxe of situations, and so much more. All of those experiences have combined to provide a unique perspective that you can’t really find anywhere else.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Oh gosh, hands down Bali to one of those overwater villas. I’m a budget traveler and that’s the kind of trip I would never take myself on (too expensive!)
What is your favorite dish? Fish and chips!
Which babe in history would you want to have lunch with, and why? Mary, Queen of Scots. She was queen of two countries at once and had mad balancing skills.
Do you have any weird talents? Oh gosh. Not so much weird as they are off the wall - I’ve soloed an airplane and I play four instruments!
Are you an early bird or night owl? Depends on the week and where in the world I am!
What was the last book you read? Scrappy Little Nobody (Anna Kendrick)
What is your favorite social media platform? Instagram, forsure.
What is your go-to drink? A scofflaw (http://www.liquor.com/recipes/scofflaw/)
What can’t you leave home without? My notebook
Best thing about where you live? That I have a kickass suitcase to tote around the world!
Are you a dog or cat person? Ooh, I’ve always said cat (I used to have a Savannah cat) but dogs are growing on me too.

What is your favorite quote? “Be at peace, not in pieces” (I actually have it tattooed on my body in Arabic.
